wrt54gl as access point

I've read lots of different threads here regarding using the wrt54gl as an access point but to no avail.

I have a 2 wire router with wifi (ATT uverse), but the wifi is not very good.  From my desktop wired directly to the router I get 10-12Mbps at speedtest net.  On wifi I get a range of 0.5Mbps to maybe 8.0Mbps on a great day.  Average of about 2-3Mbps)

I wanted to try the wrt54gl to see if I could get a better consistent signal.

Here are the steps I followed.

1 - plugged an ethernet cable from my 2wire router into 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the wrt54gl's ethernet ports.  Not the one that says internet.

2 - logged into the router settings by going to 192.168.1.1

3 - Once in, changed the IP to 192.168.1.2, disabled DHCP, changed the SSID to the same as my 2wire router.  Set up secutiry with and same password. Changed the channel to a different channel than the 2 wire wifi.

4 - When I use SSIDer I can see both wifi's operating.  One on channel 1 and one on channel 6.

If I disable the wifi on the 2wire I can join the wrt54gl's wifi but if I visit a webpage I get the message "internet explorer is not connected to the internet"  So that leads me to believe that it was never really broadcasting anything and I was on the 2wire's wifi before disabling it.

What do I need to change??

Thanks for your help
