Why do Linksys routers not support NAS in bridged mode? It doesn't make sense to me. Obviously we don't want to have multiple LANs in our houses.
I have a small room in my house where all kinds of meters, cables, etc. are located and come together. We call that a meterkast in Dutch. The fiber optics cable goes into the meterkast and connects the house to the rest of the world. There I have a fiber optics modem, which at the same time serves as a router. It even has a wireless network built-in, but I disabled it because it cannot reach anywhere useful. Anyway, each room has two ethernet cables going through the walls and connected to this modem/router directly. So, all I need is to have one wireless access point on each floor of the house to add wireless access to this LAN. I definitely do not want to create a new LAN on every floor in addition to the existing wired one.
I want to have one LAN so that all devices can easily see other devices without doing anything clever. It obviously has to be the one where all the cables go to. So, all routers have to be in bridged mode. But, in this mode all the functionality is disabled. I will have to buy a NAS like QNAP or something like that, but it would be nice if for the time being I could simply attach an external drive to a router. I really don't understand the need to disable this functionality. Can someone explain me why this is the case?
Thanks.
