Mac cannot connect after sleep with WPA enabled

I recently bought a MacBook Pro (OS 10.9.5).  When the Mac "wakes up" from sleep, it does not reconnect to the wireless network.  When this problem occurs, the connection gives the appearance of being connected (green dot in network settings, IP address assigned), but cannot access internet or other network resources.  I can re-establish a connection by turning Wifi off/on in the Mac's network settings,

After considerable troubleshooting with Applecare they believe it is a router issue and suggested I change the channel. This didn't solve the problem; however, I have discovered that if I remove WPA security and make it an open network, the problem goes away.  This is obviously not a long-term solution.

I have an E3500 router.  Router settings include:

  • Network Mode: Mixed
  • Security Mode: WPA2 Personal
  • Channel Width: 20 MHz only
  • CHannel: 5 - 2.432 GHz
  • Broadcast SSID: Enabled

Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
